Notaries' Rules require that fees should be reasonable in all the circumstances of the work being asked to do. Notaries charge fees based mainly on the amount of time that is needed to do the work. They may charge more if the work has to be done out of normal hours, if it requires specialist skills such as translation skills, or if it involves a matter of unusual complexity or value.

My current hourly rate is £210 (I am not registered for and do not charge VAT). In addition to my own fees, I may need to charge out-of-pocket expenses for legalisation fees to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office or for Embassies, fees to translators or advisers on foreign law or for travel and postal expenses.

• I can usually give an estimate of charges once I have seen the relevant documents.
• I reserve the right to retain documents until fees have been paid.
